IOLs

Cataracts can impact your vision on top of existing conditions like near and farsightedness or astigmatism.

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are a permanent solution that can treat cataracts and restore your eyesight at the same time.

Learn how Mills Eye + Facial Surgery can restore your eyesight in Pensacola, FL, using the latest IOLs.

What are IOLs?

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are see-through lenses that can help restore your eyesight by correcting refractive errors, a major cause of visual impairment. Unlike glasses or contact lenses, IOLs become a permanent part of your eyes. Most IOLs are used in tandem with cataract surgery, which we can perform at outpatient surgical centers around the Pensacola area.

How Do IOLs Work?

Patients experience blurry vision when light is not focused correctly into the retinas, the part of your eye that transmits visual information to the brain. The shape of your eye and its various parts can impact its ability to focus light into the retina.

An IOL replaces your natural lens, a transparent disk that sits behind the iris and pupil, with a custom-made one that reflects light more accurately into your retina. IOLs are a regular part of cataract surgery, a procedure that treats your natural lens when it becomes cloudy and obscures light.

Improve Your Vision

IOLs are a long-lasting solution that improves your vision by treating refractive errors such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism.

Permanent Solution

When used for cataract surgery, intraocular lenses are the only permanent solution for vision loss due to a clouded natural lens.

Increased Independence

Intraocular lenses can decrease your dependence on glasses and contact lenses, and some patients may be able to get rid of them completely.

Our Premium Selection

Our Pensacola, FL, office offers some of the most advanced IOLs that can improve your vision with a more natural transition between different distance visions. Both of these premium brands offer toric IOLs for those with astigmatism.

Tecnis Synergy IOLs

The Tecnis Synergy lenses are multifocal IOLs that can correct refractive errors and presbyopia, a natural form of visual impairment that occurs with age. Created by Johnson & Johnson, these IOLs can provide clear and consistent vision, even in various lighting conditions like nighttime driving.

Alcon PanOptix Lens

The Alcon PanOptix Lens is the first trifocal IOL available in the US, a lens with three distinct sections instead of the typical two used in bifocal lenses. While a bifocal lens improves near and distance vision, PanOptix provides clear vision when looking at near, far, and intermediate objects.

How IOLs Are Placed

Placing IOLs is a necessary step during cataract surgery. All cataract surgeries performed by our Pensacola ophthalmologist follow this general timeline:

Local Anesthetic

Our surgeon will prepare you for surgery with eye drops and local anesthetic.

Incision

A small incision is made in the cornea so the surgeon can access the lens. The clouded lens is separated into pieces and extracted.

Insertion

After the cataract is removed, the compressed IOL is inserted into your eye with a minimally invasive tool.

Positioning

The compressed IOL will unroll and shift into the correct position, replacing your natural lens.
